Add-ons

Add-ons
These additional sessions provide background to aspects of Miriam's Vision.

These lesson plans and resources have been included in Miriam's Vision in response to feedback from learners and teachers. They provide context for different aspects of MV.

The Add-ons are intended to be combined with, and to complement, any of the Miriam's Vision subject-based Schemes of Work, especially as listed below. They can also be used as stand-alone sessions but they do not replace the subject-based MV Schemes of Work.

Update

Developing Resilience: The Covid Pandemic was uploaded in response to the Covid 19 pandemic. It is an opportunity for students to focus explicitly on using and developing their own resilience in adversity. Resilience is a common theme in many Miriam's Vision materials. This session was originally intended for use directly by students in their own homes during lockdown, independently or with support. It can still be used independently by students, or in the classroom or in any learning environment.

Miriam's Vision Add-on sessions

Miriam Hyman Remembered
This is an abridged version of the Miriam Remembered blog that was posted after the bombings. It gives students a fuller picture of what Miriam was like as a person, and shows that her own values are reflected in the work done at the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre and through Miriam's Vision. More about Miriam can be found in the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust section of this website.

Fundraising
Young people who are easily radicalised often lack self-esteem and a sense of belonging. A constructive alternative is needed. Engaging in altruistic activities inspires the satisfaction of making a real-world positive impact on the lives of others and helps to develop a sense of purpose and self-worth. This is an optional suggestion for fundraising activities to support the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust, or any charity.

Terrorism: What? When? Where?
This session can be used if students express interest in the context of the 7/7 London bombings. The issue of violent extremism is not directly tackled in the curricular Miriam's Vision lesson plans. However, curiosity is natural, and this session looks at the context of terrorism and some historical precedent for violent extremism. Five concise case studies of organisations and individuals include that which relates to 7/7.

Risk / Benefit
This session is helpful if students express anxiety, for example about using public transport in light of the context of MV, or about being in crowded public spaces, for example after the Manchester Arena attack in 2017. It explores the nature of risk and the relationship between risk and benefit.

Vision
This sessions draws together the concepts of "vision" within the Miriam's Vision resource. Defining "vision", it examines how our eyes work, goes into visual impairment and then the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre. It ends with "Miriam's vision of the future".

Life in London
When participating in Miriam's Vision, students who are unfamiliar with London have asked questions such as, "Why do people need to go under the ground to go on trains?!" This session provides students with some context if they haven't visited a big city like London before.
