The Silks

There was a wide range of different silk items on sale.

Items of Judaica included:

Challah Covers

Challah is the loaf of bread eaten on the Sabbath and on the festivals. When the table is laid, a cover is placed over the challah and then removed to reveal the loaf when the family are ready to make the blessing on bread.

There was a whole rail of challah covers.

Kippoth

There were also kippoth. A kippah is the skull cap worn by Jewish men. The shape and decorativeness of these kippoth are more commonly seen in the East.

Pesach Cloths and Afikomen Bags

There was a rail with both Pesach cloths and Afikomen bags. Both of these are used on the first two nights of the festival of Passover, or Pesach. On those nights there is an elaborate ceremony called the Seder recounting the story of the Exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, and these cloths are used in the rituals involving the flat dry bread, matza, which Jews eat instead of bread for the eight days of the festival. The Afikomen is a symbollic matza which has different traditions associated with it in different parts of the world.

Tallith

The tallith is the prayer shawl traditionally worn by men when praying. Some women now wear prayer shawls during services.
