Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust
Miriam was one of the fifty-two people killed in the "7/7" London bombings of 7 July 2005. Her family and friends set up the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust in May 2008 and equipped the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre (MHCECC) within the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. This is a living memorial; a place of hope, healing and rehabilitation for children who need eye care services, irrespective of the ability to pay. There is now an annual average of 10,000 Outpatients appointments (25% without charge), 1,000 surgeries (50% without charge) and fifty free pairs of spectacles distributed at the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre. Its Outreach Programme is responsible for average 1,000 school and slum children's general screening and retina scanning of 400 premature babies, all without charge.
"Every time a child is treated at the MHCECC, Miriam's memory is invoked and her spirit lives on through those children whose sight is restored in her name." - Dr Taraprasad Das, Vice Chairman of the L V Prasad Eye Institute
The suffering that follows violent terrorism is intense, extensive, avoidable and cannot be justified in any circumstances. In addition to its work in India, the MHMT is seeking to address this by promoting social cohesion and responsible citizenship through education. We are working towards a safer, more inclusive society with our resource, "Miriam's Vision: A Response to the 2005 London Bombings". This is Miriam's legacy, and refers to her story and her memorial, the MHCECC.
