Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust
Miriam was one of the fifty-two people killed in the "7/7" London bombings of 7 July 2005. Her family and friends set up the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust in May 2008 and equipped the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre (MHCECC) within the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. This is a living memorial; a place of hope, healing and rehabilitation for children who need eye care services, irrespective of the ability to pay. Since its inauguration on 03 July 2008 there have been over 60,000 Outpatients appointments (25% without charge) and over 6,000 surgeries (50% without charge) (July 2014).
"Every time a child is treated at the MHCECC, Miriam's memory is invoked and her spirit lives on through those children whose sight is restored in her name." - Dr Taraprasad Das, Vice Chairman of the L V Prasad Eye Institute
The suffering that follows violent terrorism is intense, extensive, avoidable and cannot be justified in any circumstances. In addition to its work in India, the MHMT is seeking to address this by promoting social cohesion and responsible citizenship primarily, but not exclusively, through schools.
